Schliesing PTO wood chippers: putting tractor power to work
For arborists, local authorities, landscapers, agricultural businesses or professionals who already have a tractor, a PTO wood chipper - driven by the tractor's power take-off - is a particularly attractive alternative to a chipper equipped with its own engine.
With its ZX range, Schliesing uses tractor power directly to offer machines capable of processing branches from 16 to 30 cm in diameter, with models suitable for tractors from around 25 to 100 hp.
1. Why choose a PTO wood chipper?
The main advantage of a Schliesing PTO chipper lies in the way it works: the chipper uses the tractor's power take-off to drive its cutting system.
For a company or local authority that already owns a tractor, this solution makes better use of equipment already in the fleet without requiring an additional engine dedicated to the chipper. It also simplifies machine maintenance by eliminating a separate engine and the maintenance operations associated with it.
The tractor provides both transport and power for the chipper. This combination is particularly well suited to large green spaces, estates, farms or maintenance operations carried out in rural areas.
Schliesing PTO models also retain the technologies developed for the brand's other chippers, including PowerGrip feed rollers, cutting discs with adjustable and resharpenable knives and/or V-shaped cutting systems, and large feed hoppers.
2. A PTO range for every requirement
Schliesing offers several PTO-driven wood chippers so that chipping capacity can be matched to tractor power and the work being carried out.
The compact and lightweight 175 ZX can process branches up to 16 cm in diameter and is powered by a 540 rpm PTO on a tractor rated at 25 to 50 hp.
The 235 ZX can process branches up to around 19 cm in diameter and provides a versatile solution for regular green-space maintenance work. It is ideally suited to tractors rated between 40 and 70 hp.
For more demanding applications, the 400 ZX can chip branches up to 21 cm in diameter. Its distinctive feature is its swivelling discharge chute, which makes it easier to position the hopper on site behind a tractor rated at 50 to 80 hp. It is also available as the 400 ZX chassis version, with a 270° swivelling discharge chute and a galvanised chassis.
Finally, the 550 ZX is the most powerful model in the three-point range. Designed for tractors rated at around 100 to 200 hp, it can chip branches up to 30 cm in diameter, thanks in particular to its chipping disc fitted with three knives.
The range therefore makes it possible to choose a chipper according to three essential criteria: available power, maximum branch diameter and the intensity of the work.
3. The 550 U: a chipper specially designed for the Unimog
Alongside its conventional PTO chippers, Schliesing offers a particularly specialised machine: the 550 U.
This wood chipper was developed specifically for front mounting on a Mercedes-Benz Unimog and to use its power take-off. It accepts branches up to** 30 cm in diameter** and operates with a 1,000 rpm PTO. Thanks to the power transmitted by the vehicle (140 to 240 hp), the 550 U effortlessly turns branches into uniform wood chips.
The key advantage of this configuration lies in the versatility of the Unimog. The vehicle acts as** carrier, means of transport and power source for the chipper**, creating a combination that is particularly well suited to roadside work, forestry operations or worksites requiring a high level of mobility.
Front mounting is also a genuine distinguishing feature compared with conventional three-point PTO chippers: Schliesing developed the 550 U specifically around the architecture and available power of the Unimog.
